Caves of Armenia

Caves of Armenia. There exist more than one hundred caves in Armenia, from a few meters to several kilometers in length. Of natural caves, there are more karst caves. Their origin is due to the water washing out the soluble rock (limestone, conglomerate, gypsum, salt). Their main feature is the combination of wide halls with narrow passages. In some places, there are rich dripstones.

The largest karst caves of the Republic of Armenia were found on the left bank of River Arpa from Areni village to Agarakadzor village. They are Archeri, Magela, Mozrovi, Vayk, Simoni and others. The part is located on steep and hard-to-reach slopes and one can get to them only on foot. In the caves of extraordinary beauty, one can see thin stalactites and stalagmites filling complex underground passages, which sometimes extend for hundreds of meters.
