Khor Virap
Khor Virap (deep dungeon) is a monastery in Armenia (Ararat province), located almost on the state border with Turkey, at the foot of the biblical Mountain Ararat.
The monastery is located above the deep underground prison, in which the Armenian King Trdat the Third kept in custody St. Gregory the Illuminator for 13 years before he was converted to Christianity (in 301). The entrance to the underground prison, which has survived to our days, is located in the chapel, named after the St. Gregory, and was restored in 1661.
Khor Virap Hill is located on the site of the ancient capital of Armenia, the famous ancient city of Artashat, founded in the 1st century BC. By the Armenian Tsar Artashes the First.
